change body temperature instead of wasting energy treating air

article by: WIRED
Wristify, as they call their device, is a thermoelectric bracelet that regulates the temperature of the person wearing it by subjecting their skin to alternating pulses of hot or cold, depending on what’s needed. The prototype recently won first place at this year’s MADMEC, an annual competition put on by the school’s Materials Science and Engineering program, netting the group a $10,000 prize, which they’ll use to continue its development. It’s a promising start to a clever approach that could help alleviate a serious energy crisis. But as Sam Shames, the MIT senior who helped invent the technology, explains, the team was motivated by a more prosaic problem: keeping everyone happy in a room where no one can agree where to set the thermostat.

animation turned up to eleven: audience participation required

it's up to the viewer to actively watch and follow the action with there personal viewing device. animation will be composed inside a 360 degree world of view adding to the list of various material using a panorama presentation as their medium. Google is one example of a company incorporating 360 degree visuals to help the viewer's experience with understanding a location at street level before actually traveling to that location. Video games seem to be one of the first variations to use a 360 presentation with participation as other entities, such as; Maps/streets, star gazing, animation/video/film, virtual tours, and large format photography are becoming more user friendly with the new medium. Can you think of other entities that I missed?

Disruption guru Christensen: Why Apple, Tesla, VCs, academia may die

VCs aiming too high

Christensen said he thinks the venture capital world needs to be disrupted because it is focused too much on making big killings on big investments at a time when there are plenty of good smaller investments to be made on companies that will be disruptive.

He offered as an example his friend, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Before teaching, Christensen ran a small company in Massachusetts at the same time Romney started Bain Capital, and the firm invested $1 million in Staples when it was just starting out.

Romney actually took the time to call and to ask him to buy his supplies from Staples, even though he was just a small business. But when Christensen some years later sent another friend who was raising $1 million for a good idea, Romney told the man that Bain didn’t make those kinds of investments any more. They only wanted to invest $10 million or more.

“Venture capital is always wanting to go up market. It’s like the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. 'Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink.' People in private equity complain that they have so much capital and so few places to invest. But you have lots of entrepreneurs trying to raise money at the low end and find that they can’t get funding because of this mismatch. I think that there is an opportunity there.”

Nikola Tesla and the Myth of the Lone Inventor

article by: PACIFIC STANDARD

“The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result,” he wrote in 1900. “He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up. His work is like that of the planter—for the future. His duty is to lay the foundation for those who are to come, and point the way.”

COMIC BOOK GIFs!!!

The CreatorsProject: article about using GIFs as comic "book" enhancers

http://thecreatorsproject.vice.com/blog/schoolgirls-is-a-new-comic-in-gif-form

The next chapter of digital graphic novels may look a lot like those by French animator and illustrator, Stephen Vuillemin. His comic, Schoolgirls, utilizes gifs to infuse panels with bursts of animation. The tenth and final episode in the 300 GIF series premiered this week as part of the Arte supported publication, "Professor Cyclope."
"I read comics very fast. I don't spend a lot of time looking at the pictures," explained Vuillemin. "I wanted my readers to be able to do the same with my comics, despite the animation. So I came up with some rules. One: if there is a speech bubble, it stays on for the loop, so that the reader doesn't have to wait for it to appear to read it. Two: a single frame of each picture should give enough information to understand the action. The animation is kind of a "bonus" to it, but you should be able to read it without looking at the animations."

YAHOO! logo: new (video)

GIZMODO article:
"The new logo was designed by an in-house team at Yahoo, and it's based on a typeface designed by Hermann Zapf in the mid-1950s called Optima. The design team chose to add quite a bit of depth to the mark, both through shadows and through an extruded line that runs down the middle of each character. The result is jarringly three-dimensional, and paired with a blinding new hue of purple, was clearly designed to stand out on mobile screens."

road building: video of resurfacing

Unlimited Access: I-57 Road Construction

E.T. Simonds, a local construction company based in Carbondale, Illinois. We have full access to the entire construction site, which made for some really unique shooting opportunities. The project consisted of widening a four-mile stretch of I-57 from 2 to 3 lanes. The site is located just outside Mt. Vernon, Illinois, and is slated for completion in December of 2013.

The video follows all of the major steps of resurfacing, from laying down chairs and rebar, to dumping concrete, and the hand-finishing of each lane. We even made a trip to the local Ready Mix plant to see how the concrete is prepared and delivered.

The project was shot on a Canon 5D Mark III. There are also a few aerial shots that a friend shot with a remote control multirotor helicopter.

the return of the bicycle (messager)

maybe it's not a full return because they (bikes) never really left but it seems more cities are designing/implementing bike features into road-ways. i think riding a bike lets one absorb the surroundings versus an inclosed vehicle that creates a false sense of knowing.  it's like when you drive past an area multiple times and then, for some reason, bike and/or walk that same area produces a different perspective. now, GO RIDE A BIKE!!

coffee ice cubes

i've had this idea of coffee ice cubes although now i'm thinking espresso ice cubes might be slightly better of an idea :)  perhaps then, one may use an esp. ice cube in their water to add some flavor. one shot per cube?
i would suggest not pouring hot coffee right into the plastic tray, but cool it first.  that's just coming from a guy that's not a big fan of plastics and food.  my grandparents had metal ice cube trays, and 70 years later the grandkids now have them. not everyone participates in the "reduce and reuse" part of the cycle.
"It's long been known that infinitesimal bits of plastic get into our food from containers. The process is called "leaching" or "migration." The chemical industry acknowledges that you can't avoid this transfer, noting on its web site that "[v]irtually all food packaging materials contain substances that can migrate into the food they contact."
The amounts are small, says Laura Vandenberg, PhD, postdoctoral fellow in biology at Tufts University in Boston. "But almost any plastic container can be expected to leach trace amounts of plastics into food," she says.  http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/cookware-plastics-shoppers-guide-to-food-safety

lighting techniques are taught in film/tv classes but i think lighting should be taught in elementary school.  it's more than just knowledge for someone shooting a scene w/ a camera. light plays an important role in everyone's life. first of all, with no light we would all be "blind".  simple to think about but easy to take for granted we can see, and we can see only because there are waves bringing our eyes information.  sure we learn about some technical stuff about waves and light in high school, but those are trees and i'm talking about the forest of light.  every time someone says, "oh, i didn't notice that", 99% of the time missing something is because of the lighting, the other times it's a trick someone played on him/her.  there are lots of objects out there that we humans think are working or not working just by looking at a light.

google calendar (to remind or not to remind)

i love google and the products it offers.  i just wish more things were set to manual than full-blown auto; eg. google calendar.  every time i create an event it automatically sets TWO reminders (one email and the other a pop-up) for 10 minutes before the event starts.  THEREFORE... every time i create an event i spend a couple of seconds deleting shit i don't need off of the event.  reminders are worthless, most likely because whatever the event is that i'm attending is going to be farther away than 10 minutes.

ONCE in a great while i do need to use the reminder for an event and then you come to realize that reminders don't work past 4 weeks... OK, i have a reception in July, the RSVP is 2 months before that and it's now only march?!?!?!?!?!?!  i can't set a reminder because i can only go back from july to june so i have to then create a NEW EVENT just to remind myself... and of course i need to delete both auto-reminders again for that too.

blogs pages posts viewBlogs new windows tabs etc...

sometimes google tries too hard and gets more confusing as, i assume, it tries to be more helpful.

so from a HTML web creating background i land on a page that lets me visualize my various blogs, i have 2. inside each blog they offer "overview, pages, posts, comments, google+, etc..."

long story short... creating a NEW PAGE is easy.  adding posts to that new page is really difficult. sometimes it opens a new tab to view blog and other times it doesn't.  i'm sure i'll understand it all someday but it's frustrating when there is a backend to a backend to a backend and then i find out my blogger wasn't connected to my g+ so i added it and when i added it google told me i already had my google profile attached to my account.

GO FISH.

A fresh new start for storing ideas

after spending a LOT of time thinking about how to manage ideas that come across my mind throughout each and every second of the day i decided to come back to "the blog". funny how things work. originally thinking i would use facebook as a means of storing info... DAMN! i wasted a lot of time with that... the timeline feature, etc... it's all hogwash. it's great for staying up to date but to use facebook as a tool is like trying to spoon out peanut-butter with a ritz cracker.
